Where Do I Start?

Decide what area of the automotive industry you want to work in (look through career information material, talk to people in the industry, do work experience).

Contact employers.  Direct contact is often best.

Look for potential employers in your local area, in the phone book, on the internet, in the local and daily newspapers, ask friends, family, ask industry associations, look in trade journals.

Once you have your list of companies check if you really want to work for them.  How far do you want to travel?  Remember you will have to be able to get there each day, on time.  Is the type of company you want to work for, big or a small specialist or general?

Find out who in the company makes decisions on recruitment.  Speak to that person and ask if they have a few minutes to talk to you about your skills, their needs as an employer and the possibility of employment or work experience.  If they are too busy now, make a time that is convenient to them for you to call back, or make a time to meet with them in person as this is often best.

What Qualities Do I Need?

Anyone who has the ability and enthusiasm for the job can be a trainee or apprentice.  The minimum age limit is 15 years of age.  You just need an employer who is willing to take you on as an employee and you need to be able to demonstrate:

  • A commitment to an automotive career
  • A positive attitude towards work and learning
  • An ability to communicate with work mates and customers
  • Enthusiasm and motivation
  • The ability to understand and apply technical information
  • Computer literacy
  • Responsibility, flexibility and able to function well in a team environment
